What is Shindō-Ryu?

Am I too young?
We start training from about 5 years old.
Am I too old?
If you are still breathing and have a pulse then you are not too old to start. We will modify the training to meet your physical abilities. Everyone can gain from karate, and as the name of the style suggests this is your reality. No one expects karate for a 20 year old to be the same as karate for a 70 year old.
How long does it take to get a black belt?
Amazon offer next day deliver, but seriously 3 to 5 years of training to get 1st Dan black belt.
Do I have to fight?
No, sparring is not done until black belt and then only if you are under 40. We do pair work to simulate an attack in a controlled fashion.
Will I be the only female?
We have a mixed class with both male and female.
I have a disability can I still do karate?
Over the years we have taught people with both physical and mental differences. One of our senior instructors, Ryan, is differently able and despite the challenges he has faced, he has gone on to achieve a senior rank in both the club and the style. Our founder believes that everyone should be able to succeed at karate.
I am not very flexible can I still do karate?
Some of our students can kick above their heads and some can only get to knee hight our training is adapted to meet the needs of the individual. Generally, we have found that flexibility improves with training.
Can I stay and watch my kids train?
Stay and watch or go it is entirely up to you. You will be most welcome at all the lessons and at the coloured belt gradings. All we ask is that you leave a contact number just in case we need to contact you.
Do I have to learn Japanese?
We have found over the years that people pick up an amount of Japanese as we use both English and Japanese for the names of the techniques. However fluancy in Japanese is not necessary. .
